Somebody fill me in on this. I was in Key Largo all weekend attending a family wedding, which was fabulous I must say, and I missed pretty much all of the Billabong Pro in Rio from round 2 and on. I didn’t get to watch it live but I just watched this highlight video below of the quarter finals through and I must say I am shocked by the amount of claiming that is going on in these heats? Did I miss something, is this an inside joke? It has to be right, since they are in Brazil and most Brazilians are huge claimers? I’m not sure, maybe everybody was super amped and in the “claiming” mood but we see fist pump claims, shotgun claims, straight-back claims, wide eyed stare down the judge claims and even a super odd arms cross claim? (performed by the acrobat known as Gabriel Medina) I’m baffled, but I must say this, the surfing in the final was amazing and the right that Jordy and Adriano were surfing looked a lot like a windy day at Caangu or even Keramas, so I am excited to see what kind of crazy claims these guys will be throwing down in Bali next month. I think we might see the most innovative, high performance (those words are so cliché and gross related to this but still stand true) event in ASP history and team Sunrise will be there to watch it and surf in the Oakley shop challenge at the same time! The first person that comes in the shop and tells me how many claims appear total in the video below gets a free pad and leash with the purchase of their next board at the shop. “courtesy of whichever company’s rep I can hit up for some promo”

So the Thompson tribe just posted a new video through there Vimeo account and the title is Solitary Arrangement. It’s a smear of clips from a spot in North FL that has been anything but solitary lately. The spot has been blow out by UNFer’s, Mel-B crew and other southern entities all swarming on its fun little punchy peaks. We have had a good run of swell this spring and the Thompson brothers have been all over it. Spinning his board through the air is Tristan, Cody performs his trademarked alley oops, and the brother with no main sponsor logo who is smashing, carving and boosting all over the place is middle brother Evan. It’s a good indicator of how bad the surf industry is doing when somebody who surfs as good as Evan, is as well rounded as him, and has such a good head on his shoulders as he does, can’t even get a sponsor? Shame on all the big 5’s, you know who you are (QuikBongHurlComNei’ll) for not stepping up and getting behind a kid who deserves it as much as anybody else. Unfortunately the powers that be, the ones who run these companies and ran this industry into its current state, are too busy focusing on saving their necks and staying above water to really promote the future of surfing. Enjoy this clip and be happy that the best part of surfing, the joy you get from riding a wave, can never be diluted or destroyed by anything. Here’s to Evan and the rest of the tribe! Keep doing what you guys are doing and good things will happen.

Ok’ so I think its safe to say Double John Flo is possibly surpassing Dane Reynolds as master of the surf clip. This is the third JJF clip I have seen that has thoroughly blown me away. Its not entirely his surfing, although it really is because without that element nothing else stands, but its the over all package. Editing, creativeness of scenes, stellar-beyond quality footage, great music and good old fashioned kick you in the teeth lip bashing and carving. John J is just on fire right now and all you ever read about is how nice, humble and down to earth he is. This kid deserves everything he has and then some. Watch this clip about 3 times to soak it in, I had to.

This isn’t actually a new video and maybe most out there have already seen it. Nonetheless I felt it fitting that we post this considering how many ..Lost surfboards we have in stock right now. Last week a shipment of 18 …Lost models came into the shop, V2 Rockets, Sub Drivers, Sub-Scorcher 2′s, Couch Potatoes, Lazy Boys, F1 Stubs, Taj Whips, Taj Beach Buggys, you name it, we probably got it- if not we will get it. Added to our current inventory that puts us at almost 30 lost boards total (if you have seen our modest sized boardroom you know that’s a lot). Ok, that’s enough of my salesman schpeel, the whole point of this post is to give you internet roamers out there a little entertainment. Sit back and watch this clip from Lost.Tv called spring fling or spring cleaning or something? Its got multiple pro ripper’s slashing on a lot of these new models we have in stock. Getting a Taj buggy wont make the waves in Jax look like Rincon and it sure as hell wont make you surf like Taj, but it could just make your surfing a little better and god knows the majority of us out there need every little bit of help we can get. There is a nice little cameo of Bobby Martinez and Slater on the video, both riding Channel Islands, not …Lost. (actually Bobby is riding the CI model the New Flyer- we have those in stock as well)

The Sub Driver is something Kolohe Andino specifically asked for this spring. Most his small or mushy wave surfing had been on 5’10 x 18.88 x 2.25 Sub Scorchers. In solid or curvy, more powerful waves he has been riding his 6’0 x 18.25 x 2.25 squash tail Drivers. He asked for to make him something in between his “Driver with a Sub Scorcher outline”. Using the AKU shaping program I simply imported the Sub Scorcher’s outline onto the Driver rocker, bottom, foil and rails. We then sized it just between the Sub Scorcher and his Driver at 5’11 x 18.75 x 2.25. The result is a board he’s been riding in all sorts of waves from knee high San Clemente beach breaks to fun sized Indo. We came up with a cool new logo and rushed this model into the US stores for summer 2011. More nose rocker and less tail rocker (with no vee) than the Sub Scorcher. This is a great all around small to mid sized wave board for both average and exceptional surfers. Early response has been fantastic. Mick Fanning rode one of Kolohe’s 5’11 Sub Driver trade-ins into the quarter-finals (he lost on a count back) of the Hurley Pro at Trestles this year.
