Sunrise Surf Shop was stoked to help award the Matt Gray Scholarship May 29th,at Fletcher High School to some very talented and deserving individuals. Pictured here is Matt’s dad, Andy, who is battling cancer. Andy was given one year to live and three years later he is still rocking on strong. Also in this picture is a great donor to the scholarship, Charlie Stephens who was paralyzed while surfing over 10 years ago. Matt visited Charlie in the ICU and was a great friend to him before and after the accident. #mattgraymemorial #thankyoueveryonewhohelped. Good Job to two of our talented team riders Cason Kirk, and Frank O’rourke for earning 1,000 dollars towards their college endeavors.

If you were around last weekend and into the middle part of last week you more then likely surfed this swell. We were stoked up here at Sunrise when we saw that Team rider Asher Nolan had a sequence from last weeks swell that happened to be right here at home. Check it out by clicking on the link below….

Surfboard designs are getting crazier and crazier all the time. The problem is how do you tell if something is legit and is going to work and ride good or if its just a novelty shape. Something that looks cool and excels in certain areas (might do good airs or be a good cutback board) but overall isn’t that great of a board? Well Firewire just partnered with Tomo surfboards from Australia and put out a new board called a vanguard. Its basically a straight outline with a little curve in it, a chopped off nose and a blocky tail that looks like the engine of a spaceship blasted back from the future. It looks like it would be one of those “novelty” shapes but i keep hearing from a lot of people, and people i trust, that it rides really well. Surfs good in the pocket, does good on open face and is great for blasting airs. Adam Melling is a WCT surfer who actually rode one of these at the U.S. Open last year, did good on it and got a lot of attention. After watching one of his heats Kelly Slater said that boards like the Vanguard are the future and that nobody needs the last 6 inches of foam that are at the top of our boards. Melling surfs pretty damn well rounded on his Tomo in the clip i posted below. Come into the shop and check one out before we sell through them all!!
