If you are a skateboarder you support your local skate scene. If you are not a skater you should support your local skate scene. Jacksonville is stoked to have Instaramp in their own backyard. The INSTARAMP crew is a core group of rad humans. Check the footage below provided by Instaramp and Sunrise of this past weekends “Thrash and Flash” event. Big thanks to everyone involved and stoked to have Sunrise Family member Mike Peterson represent and win the event.
Come check out the new Buck Smith and Mike Peterson Sunrise decks we just received! These 2 characters have done a lot to put the Jacksonville skate scene on the map for a long time. Throughout it all they have been Sunrise family and will be til the end of time! Keep rolling and having fun the way these guys do and you will live a long happy life!! 7.75, 8, 8.25 and 8.5 are the sizes available for these! Limited run, get them before they are gone! @the_block_tf #bucksmith #legendsdonthaveinsta #dinger #sunrisecollab
One of the most popular sayings of all time that has been plastered all over shirts and stickers for years is “Skateboarding Is Not a Crime”. The reality is that in a lot of metropolitan cities and suburbs all over America skateboarding is a crime and at Hemming plaza in downtown Jacksonville it is 364 days out of the year. The one day that its not, the one day that skateboarders are somewhat accepted by society and its regulators, the one day you can legally enjoy those beautiful ledges, the rail and the stairs, that one day is coming this Saturday. That’s right, Saturday June 21st the city of Jacksonville allows the open shredding of one of the cities most coveted street spots. The last 2 years this event has grown and only gotten better and this year its looking like its going to be the best by far. Not only is Hemming going to be open to skate Instaramp will be there and you know anywhere they unfold that thing a heavy session goes down. This year also includes a skate, with a police escort mind you, from the Riverside Arts Market to Hemming plaza so everybody has got to be there for that to show the city how many of us there are! I’m going to attach a full schedule of the days events below and a few photos from the previous years. Trust me, from someone who has experienced it, this is one of the best events of the year and the more people that come the better. Sunrise will also be sponsoring a best trick event at 6pm and a ramp jam at 8pm so don’t miss out on that. The day kicks off at noon so come downtown to take part in the one day that you can get out and grind at Hemming without being considered a criminal.

3rd AnnualGSD-Hemming 2014 is a wrap!
Buck Smith is a legend. When he speaks everyone listens. Hear what he has to say about the next generation of Rat Town. Thanks for Autoline for fueling the trip.
Right now is the perfect time of the year to get out on the water and try out stand up paddleboarding. Most people are familiar with it these days or have at least seen somebody out in the ocean or creek, gliding across the water on a small miniature boat like craft. Its actually something I have done for the last few years on flat days when there is no surf and I want to be out on the water getting some exercise for my aging old man frame. Lately I have also been surfing on one a bit, an 8’10 Naish Mana to be exact, and its actually been kind of fun. Its sparked my interest in getting AJ from Cannibal Core-Vac (who has been building some of the best shortboards and hybrids for over 20 years) to build me one of his ultra light shred SUP’s that we also carry at the shop but that’s a whole nother story.
Come by Sunrise and demo/rent one of our paddleboards and see if its something your interested in. Currently we have SUP’s available from 8’0 to 11’6 from both of those companies mentioned above and even a couple others. We also have different shapes so that anybody at any level can give it a shot. If you are serious about buying a board through us we will charge you $25 a day and once you have worked with one of the knowledgeable staff members to decide which board to purchase we will subtract $50 off the cost of that board. If your not sure and not quite ready to commit you can still rent a stand up board for $50 a day and if you hold onto that receipt we will honor the $50 off when you decide to buy.
Below are some links to the websites of the SUP brands that we support! Come by the shop and learn more as well!
Sunrise Surf Shop was stoked to help award the Matt Gray Scholarship May 29th,at Fletcher High School to some very talented and deserving individuals. Pictured here is Matt’s dad, Andy, who is battling cancer. Andy was given one year to live and three years later he is still rocking on strong. Also in this picture is a great donor to the scholarship, Charlie Stephens who was paralyzed while surfing over 10 years ago. Matt visited Charlie in the ICU and was a great friend to him before and after the accident. #mattgraymemorial #thankyoueveryonewhohelped. Good Job to two of our talented team riders Cason Kirk, and Frank O’rourke for earning 1,000 dollars towards their college endeavors.
Rozo has been shaping boards forever. A hidden talent in the North Florida area. Here is a cool video of ROZO doing his thing!!!!
The Matt Gray Memorial is a celebration of life and community love. The event is the only one of its kind that mixes skating and surfing into one contest. The skate event was held on Friday, April 11th at the Atlantic Beach Skate Park and drew more than 30 registered skaters and over 200 spectators. With a great community atmosphere, skaters from all over the beach ranging from 6 years old to 40 competed in front of a huge crowd that cheered them on all night. The surf contest was held at 19th Street in Atlantic Beach on Saturday, April 12th. The entire event brought in close to $4,000 which was raised through the events entry fee and money raised through the raffle. All proceeds go towards a scholarship in Matt Gray’s honor to a Senior at Fletcher High School. Last year, Marshall LaFrance and Jake McGuire each won $1,500 scholarships for their future college endeavors. ALL PHOTOS: JIM WALKER
